However, Sierra de Guara is not just about natural beauty and sports opportunities. One of the main gems of the region is the ancient rock paintings hidden in deep caves and secluded shelters scattered throughout the territory. These amazing works of art are not just beautiful images, but real windows into the past, allowing us to glimpse into the world of our distant ancestors. They are invaluable testimonies of the life and culture of the first representatives of Homo Sapiens who inhabited these lands in ancient times, and give us the opportunity to touch the origins of human civilization. As part of our exciting journey, we will visit two special places - the Quizans and Chimiachas shelters. Here we will see a true treasure of ancient art - the famous Deer of Chimiachas. This image is rightfully considered one of the most impressive and well-preserved examples of Levantine rock art. Its uniqueness and historical value are recognized at the international level - the Deer of Chimiachas is included in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. Standing before this ancient masterpiece, we will feel an invisible connection with our distant ancestors and immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of those times when these amazing works of art were created.

The Magical Art of Sierra de Guara: A Journey Through Time to Prehistoric Rock Paintings, Mysterious Shelters, and Pagan Relics.

Our exciting journey begins in the picturesque Alquézar, located in the province of Huesca. This charming mountain town, seemingly lost in time, is a gem and the unofficial capital of two unique nature reserves: the Sierra and Canyons of Guara Natural Park and the Río Vero Cultural Park. Leaving the cozy streets of Alquézar, we will set off along a winding mountain trail to the north, immersing ourselves in the pristine beauty of wild nature. As we ascend, a breathtaking panorama will open up before us, including the medieval outlines of Alquézar town, the majestic Río Vero Canyon, and on the horizon, the magnificent peaks of the Pyrenees, whose snowy summits reach three kilometers in height, seemingly connecting earth and sky.

Our path will continue along a narrow trail equipped with metal walkways for safety. This road will lead us to an amazing place - Balsas de Basacol. Here, among the mountain landscapes, large reservoirs created in the Middle Ages are located. These ancient reservoirs not only served practical purposes, providing water for agriculture and local residents, but were also a place for mysterious magical rituals designed to guarantee a constant supply of precious moisture. Balsas de Basacol is an ideal place for rest, where you can not only restore your strength but also feel a mystical connection with the past.

Continuing our journey, we will have a unique opportunity to explore small stone houses built by local shepherds many centuries ago. These modest but sturdy structures serve as living testimony to the traditional way of life of the mountaineers. Our route runs through picturesque landscapes where majestic oaks neighbor fragrant junipers and boxwood, and the air is filled with intoxicating scents of rosemary and lavender. This natural aromatherapy cocktail will prepare us for an encounter with one of the most mysterious places on the route - the Quizans Shelters. These amazing rock formations hold a real treasure - schematic rock paintings from the Neolithic era, silent witnesses to the lives of our distant ancestors. To fully appreciate the beauty and grandeur of the surrounding places, we will climb to the top of Tozal d'eros Tiestos mountain. From here, a breathtaking view opens up to the majestic three-thousanders of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, which literally takes your breath away.

The next point of our route will be the Chimiachas Shelter - a true pearl of prehistoric art. Here we will see one of the most impressive manifestations of Levantine rock art - the famous Deer of Chimiachas. This majestic image of an animal is rightfully considered the best example of realistic style in the entire Guara Park. The Mesolithic painting, preserved for millennia, not only impresses with its beauty and craftsmanship but also awakens our imagination, making us think about the life and worldview of ancient artists. Without a doubt, this place is filled with special magic and mystery that can be felt almost physically.

To fully comprehend what we've seen and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature, we will make a stop at the Chimiachas viewpoint. From here, there is a stunning view of the majestic walls of the gorge, and graceful vultures soar overhead, as if guarding the peace of these ancient places. Contemplating these amazing landscapes and reflecting on the rock paintings we've seen, we begin to understand that the ancient societies that created these works of art were not as alien and incomprehensible as it might seem at first glance. On the contrary, we feel a deep, almost tangible connection that unites us with our ancestors who lived on these lands thousands of years ago. This sense of unity with the past is one of the most valuable experiences that this journey gives us.

Completing our route and returning to Alquézar, we will make one last, but no less important stop in San Pelegrín. This small and charming town seems to have frozen in time, preserving the atmosphere of medieval Spain. The main attraction of San Pelegrín is the majestic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, built in the 18th century. This architectural masterpiece of the Baroque serves as a perfect final chord to our journey, symbolizing the continuity of cultural tradition from prehistoric times to the present day.
